1579 Relief

Conventions

Notes from the National Archives

This document, although it states that it relates to the relief granted to Edward VI, does not relate to thesubsidy ('relief') granted to him in 1549, but clearly from the contents, to the relief of sheep granted to him in the same year, for the hundred of Defynnog, Brecknockshire. The document is in good condition and is legible, but is creased. The heading states that the document relates to the first and third collections of the relief, but this is unusual, since the Act granting this subsidy was repealed after the collection of the first payment. The document is undated, but is endorsed with a note of delivery dated in the eighteenth year of the reign of Elizabeth I, that is, 1575. This means that the document was delivered into the Exchequer twenty-six years after the tax was granted. This is now explained by the roll containing copies of writs at E 179/219/51, from which it appears that arrears of several subsidies were being sought, including the first and third collections of the relief. From this, it seems that arrears of the subsidy ('relief')were to be collected, yet the commissioners for Merthyr and Defynnog hundreds made returns relating to the short-lived relief of sheep instead, possibly in error. This and the document now at E 179/219/47 aretwo examples of only a handful of documents known to survive in series E 179 for this tax. These two Brecknockshire documents have been previously listed as relating to a relief from the reign of Elizabeth Iand have probably been unnoticed as rare survivals relating to the relief of sheep granted to Edward VI for this reason. They do not appear in the list of known documents found in M W Beresford, 'The Poll Tax and Census of Sheep, 1549', "Agricultural History Review"|, vol 1 (1953), pp. 1-15 and vol II (1954) pp. 15-29.
